I'll have boards left over, would be easy to use a typhoon (http://www.boostled.com/product_p/typhon.htm) to control this if you didn't want to do a big integrated build like me.

I've got pretty much everything but the LEDs already including a 48V 40A regulated power supply, thanks for the offer though.

My "other" hobby is Electronics, plus 30 years repair experience so the switching current regulators, etc. are no problem and since there's an A/V PC in the living room with an unused parallel port a simple Visual Basic proggie or even Java script could control up to 11 individual strings or even an low-tech mechanical timer with soft turn on done in analog circuits but I have 3 projects to finish before taking that one on, one of them aquarium related.

How close are you to test firing the whole LED and seeing the color temp at 100% over a tank?

Small setback, an improperly secured ground wire did a little damage, fried one driver , so instead of the pretty dimming and alternating light show video I was getting ready to film I'm ordering parts.

A low blow on a day like today but a valuable lesson. I ordered the rest of the stuff that I need to shore up the wiring side for the light so that the next time I fire everything up nothing goes wrong. First night in a long time I've had the opportunity to work on it too :(

Ouch!

Even after 30+ years I still occasionally overlook or forget something and let the factory smoke out of components so don't feel bad.

If you like I could take a look at the fried unit to see if it can be repaired cheaply enough to make it worthwhile.

Well as I used to ask in support, "did you save the smoke so we can put it back in"... Setbacks are never any fun but I will patiently wait for the light show in the hopefully very near future ;)

By the way, the channel you lit up in the pics, which channel was it? Do the images show a true representative color to what you saw in person? (after the blindness settled of course)

It was either 10k or 12k not 100%. I'll have better pictures later this weekend, but I toasted a driver so it wont be all 5 channels for a bit yet.

Got dimming etc working though so just working on a way to get it over the water.

Here is 3 out of the 5 channels, the other two are just another blue and white anyway.

I had it on a heatsink, wasn't enough so I got a different one. Getting ready to mount it on the heatsink this weekend. Slow going a bit but part of that is that I can refactor until it's just right. Ordered the replacement driver for the one I blew along with the drivers i need for the rest of the lights, so progress! Going to remove the leads they had on the chip and put new full length wires on, mount it on the heatsink, and get it over the tank this weekend, is the goal!

I've solved the hanging portion, and am using a Artic Freezer Pro 7 rev 2 for cooling (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... nAodYy4A0Q) Although I'm considering this one: http://www.amazon.com/Arctic-Cooling-Fr ... m_sbs_pc_1 as another possibility.

For mounting, since I'm mounting it behind a wall, I'm using a floor gusset and 1/2 inch by 18 inch galvanized pipe. I'll paint it later to keep it rust free.

FYI the second heatsink you linked to says "Maximum cooling capacity of 90W" I don't know if I would go with that one. The other is rated to 130 Watts so you would be safer.

Was off to Wisconsin for work this week. Job has been going nuts. Sat down and soldered up a new driver board where all 5 are good. Need to pull one off the first one I did. I have all my drivers in so I can do all 3 pendants. Haggling with seller on ebay for 2 more chips so I can finish off the lights. Here is where I am now, extending the leads on the light chip and getting it mounted on the new heatsink:

Image

The goal is to get this thing over the water, and start working on the power strip controller piece. Sorry progress has been so dang slow but work is nuts right now.

Looking good! I can't wit to see some pics over water at full blast. Anyone down there have a PAR meter to test the lamp's output? If not we have one up here and I could try convince the member to bring it with in April ;)

Did you get the boards I sent should have been there early this week I would guess..

Got my other two LED panels ordered, so this build is squarely on it's way when I get back from Boston this next week, and Texas the next weekend, and Seattle in April

I am never going to have time to finish.

Trying REALLY hard to get a screen top made for the biocube and get this light up over it for testing despite the lack of time to get the big tank in place.

I'm constructing an acrylic or glass splash guard for each pendant which will be big enough to also protect the heatsink from things below, otherwise there won't be any "housing" Unless I get bored (Unlikely). the issue is getting it low enough that it doesn't interrupt flow and finding a material that isn't undoing all of the work I'm doing to build the light by sending it through something not ideal.

No Joke I came here to update the post to let you know I'm soldering up a few things right now. I've had it over the tank in shot bursts to test things. Now i'm soldering up some final wiring so i can get it over the tank for good. A little worried about my fish (firefish and a yellow goby) but hopefully they'll be happy to stay in the blasted tank.

all of that to say, hopefully i"ll have pictures of it over the water and the resulting colors/temps in a bit. Perhaps I can twist someone's arm to borrow a par meter as well.

Sadly, I'll be gone this weekend, work beckons. The Butterfly House has one, which with the appropriate deposit used to be able to be borrowed. I think that might still be the case, if so I'll hand grant a wad of cash and bring it home nad do some testing!

Also, soldering complete. Time to mount the chip to the cooler for hopefully the last time, then it's on with the hanging and hooking up.

It will be interesting to see how you decide to hang the cooler as well. I am looking forward to the pics and or video.

don't get too excited- remember this is all going to be hidden in the final iteration so I'm not aiming for "Pretty"

*nod*

Hidden is the best way as I don't like to see equipment in the final process. However there still needs to be a way to keep it from falling into the tank ;)

Very true.

Sneaky in progress shot, waiting for the thermal epoxy to dry:

Pretty sure Wickers has a PAR meter. Maybe you can do some sweet talking.

Anyone who has done custom wiring harnesses before knows what I just went through. Terminal block used to never have to re-ID wires. will put sheathing etc on it but this way the terminal and driver boards won't be anywhere near the tank.

Wire harnesses are always fun. You should see all the custom wiring done under the hood of my Ranger ;)

Probably looks about like the cluster under the hood of my 318 powered 97 wrangler.
