Haven't had the boat out yet. We were planning a trip to Lynn Lake up by Webster around June 1 but might go to the Missouri instead. If anyone knows of a good walleye bite, let me know.

Lake Brandt is having a serious northern bite ATM. I got 3 more good eating walleye tonight and lost 2 others at my feet within a 30 minute fishing stop :) Down at the spillway in Sioux Falls start around 7:30ish maybe 8pm use a 1/4-1/3oz bubble gum jig head and bubble gum mr. twister and swim it just off the bottom. Try to get a spot in the middle down below and cast straight out. If that doesn't produce (gets me plenty of 14-16 inchers) use a SRR-7 rap for those who don't know the codes it is a shallow dive shad rap black and silver. Medium retrieve if you tap bottom slow down SLIGHTLY and you will start smacking 16+ inchers until day break! Bring at least 2 because after full dark the carp move in and even with 20lb test spider wire I have had them swim off with 2 raps so far.

best thing i have found for carp is a shotgun. Fishing in the rock River when I used to live in Rock Rapids after dark was less fishing, more feeding gear to the carp. I havent fished Brandt yet, I had my boat out a few times last year and saw some good size northerns. Walleye, northern, and smallmouth are hitting hard down here in the Iowa river between Amana and Homestead.

We might need to start a fishing report thread... I usually check Dakota Angler and SDGFP but haven't found much else for good reports. Fisherman tend to be close lipped and want all the fish for themselves. Fishing is easy. Finding them is 95% of the battle.

I like the guys at dakota angler but frankly they update the reports like once a month... oh and "hit and miss" for walleye on the big sioux in this weekends 2 minute report.. well I can limit in an hour maybe 2 on a slow night every night at the spillway at this point now that I have them pinned down in the pattern.

Tournament went well this weekend up in Webster. Fished South Buffalo Saturday, Clear just for fun Saturday evening, and Enemy Swim today. There were three winner categories...boater, non-boater(riding on the back of the boat), and big fish. South Buffalo was a tough bite, and while a few people caught some nice fish, a lot of people struggled. Clear saturday evening was shockingly slow looking for smallmouth...ended up finding 5 between 3 of us fishing for a few hours. The bite was hot today at Enemy Swim. I ended up taking big fish today with a largemouth at 4.36 lbs.

yesterday I limited out in cats on the big sioux, 4-10 lbs each (had a small one) 2 blues the rest were channel. Went to lake alvin with Pallen... he can tell ya that story LMAO ended up with a crappie while trying for bass... it was big enough to attack my size 7 rap. Tossed back a limit of walleye while fishing the sioux as well. Split rock creek handed me 3.5 small mouth... before you ask the 0.5 small mouth was about 4" long that hit a 3.5" rap lol. Also so many dang turtles I thought an invasion was going on!

This is a little off topic... but anyone do any fishing for minnows and Fundulus etc... to put in a tank? I see several Fundulus species listed as being present in the area. Anyone every catch any?

lots of people fish with minnows, but there are people who sain/net/catch minnows to sell as well. Considering what they grow up to be, lots of people CATCH adult minnows around here, then promptly kill and bury them to get them out of the lake.

Keeping native species in SD. is a very very very serious no-no. Be warned. Also you can no longer net/trap/sein bait in eastern SD. Hook and line only unless you own and stock your own pond with NO connection to a natural water source.

To answer where I fish the Sioux... all over. From the Dell Rapids down to the Klondike pretty much.

Done fishing cats for awhile...freezer is full as of this AM, 4 blues 4,6,9 and 12 pounds. P.S. hauling a 12 pound cat up the 30 foot wall at the spillway SUCKS! Don't need stitches but pretty close...the line slipped as I was hand over handing the bugger.

Fine since Scott posted it I'll tell ya. First time out this year with the boat. I don't think I had enough battery charge. Big motor would barely turn over and wouldn't start. So Scott and me and my nephew just used the Trolling motor to fish the shore. About an hour in those batteries died and stranded us on the far side of the lake. Thankfully another fisherman came by and towed us back to the dock .
New batteries are installed now and I might try vermillion tomorrow

So does that mean that the bait stores cant trap minnows etc anymore for their tanks?

I know of a few people who trap fish and use what they catch to feed their chickens. Would that be legal yet?

Ive seen the local bait shop running their pickup with live tanks running around either making pickups or deliveries.

Just wondering is all

Walleyes going hot and heavy at the spillway guys. Don't fall into the habit of jigs with minnows and or raps.. right now set up a crappie rigs, go JUST upstream from the rocks (the sand beach on the west side) with a 1oz weight, use worms..yes WORMS.. you will catch some small cats, drums, and suckers but the walleyes will pound em as well. Aim for 1/2 way across the river, that was the sweet spot today.

it is right down the hill from the state pen, a couple blocks from falls park. Use google maps and go downstream from falls park you will see a 90* bend in the river with a concrete chute on the satellite image that area is the spillway.

I just started bass fishing this past year. Its pretty fun. I'm used to fishing trout/northern in the hills. So fishing out here is a lot different for me!

I need a bigger rod to go for real catfish. Not that any of mine won't work, might just take a while and a few runs off the spool!

I got a little something for the cats when I get fishing... Still have my heavy salt gear from Florida and Georgia. 150 lb test braid, double drop rigs, and some good weights. I snag a tree, I just reel the whole freaking thing in.

Keep thinking that buddy... I have 65lb test on my big pole and 35 on my small. (Catfishing poles obviously...I LOVE catfishin!) I had a 25 ish pound blue on Wednesday. Took about 15 minutes to tire him out, got him to shore and he rolled when I got his head on the rocks... line didn't break the stainless steel ball bearing salty swivel did. He shattered it. Bye bye fatty cat :( would not have eaten him though but wanted my hook and weight back! 3/0 circle hooks and 2oz. weights are not cheap!

lol seems where I fish for walleye the cats never attack my lindy rig, but when I switch over to cat fishing, the walleye keep taking that bait.

you ever fish off the dam in yankton? I once saw a guy that thought he had a snag, he ended up just wrapping the line around his trailer hitch to see if he break the line from the hook area instead of just cutting it and having to reline his reel. in the end, it was a 60-70lb cat instead of a snag. lol cool to watch though

Fished a smallie tournament at Poinsett today. I didn't catch crap for bass, just 3 dink keepers that barely broke 12". I did bring home a 20" and 25" walleye though. Guy in the boat with me pulled in a 15lb cat that decided to suck up his tube jig. Another guy fishing with us landed a 20+ lb carp.
