Run a virus scanner. You most definitely should not be getting ads. If you dont have one I always recommend Avast! Free version.

Go to your computers Control Panel, Program, and look for anything strange or anything that sounds like a search bar or anything you dont recognize.

i don't get a pop up. I also use Spybot search and Destroy. It's a free download that I use in conjunction with my Norton 360

S+D is a must have for every computer. I would put money on that finding the culprit before Norton would.

It finds stuff that Norton doesn't, sometimes.

Also many things you download now days have "extras" you need to look out for. Keep an eye out during installation for any checkboxes, usually with the "Accept User Agreement" box. Many try to install extra browsers and search bars. Mywebsearch is a big one that hijacks your browser to use its own search engine and hit you with ads.

I download off cnet. My dad said that was a safe site and I haven't heard otherwise?

I would just go to the actual site.

http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

There has been some talk lately of the cnet downloader having some spyware in it.

ok thanks Nate. It was probably a year or two ago, if not longer, when my dad told me.
