Wichers 300G Tank Build

Postby wichers » Sat Jul 14, 2012 6:17 pm

Time to start the 300 build thread! Here I have a 8ft long x 2.5ft deep x 2ft height acrylic aquarium. It sits on a 1.5" square tubing stand, that is too large to fit in my basement. Will have to cut it in half in order to fit in the basement. As for the aquarium to be moved it will have to go through a basement bedroom window.

I had started buffing this last weekend, got novus 3 all done, novus 2 inside the tank done, and 1 panel of novus 2 done on the outside. Until the backing plate for the buffer flew across the garage and luckily didn't harm anything or anyone in that manor. Got a new backing plate on order and hope to hit it up again in the next couple of weeks. So here is a couple of shot for you!

Wife had to take a couple of photos since I told her I was going to work inside the tank to get it ready for buffing. She did not know I was actually going to go inside it. And asking me how I got in there. I told her I need a different ladder to get out. Cause that wooden ladder was awful wobbly.

This should prove to be a fun thread to watch! Did it get pretty dusty when sanding in there?

Yea, but finally had some time. So didn't want to miss out on the opportunity. Wife has informed me tonight that it'll be another 2 months before I can repaint the back. She got me on her planned schedule (aka... never to get done... LOL). Will have to see how dreadful this build is going to be.

oh. I was wondering if it had something to do with the stinky paint...lol. You stunk up the garage once so you aren't doing it again for awhile :P

So, we need to plan an impromptu 'get together' at your place that involves paint, buffing and stand installation, then magically show up?

Well got some 3/4" styrofoam to put underneath the tank this week. Got the back painted. Still in the garage at the moment, put the strofoam under the tank and started to fill her up. Got a gap on the left side of the tank, say about 1/8"-3/16". So filled it up 3/4 full and put shims on the left side. With the pressure it is slowly moving back now, I'm pulling the shims out little by little, than in the AM will finish filling and continue the same till I feel comfortable about it. Was shooting for a get some help tomorrow but since I got this problem, its not going to happen. Just want the tank indoors before snow is on the ground. Will sit in the office until I get the stand cut up and ready to go for its final position.

it will probably return to its position of having a gap if its going to sit empty. so just remember you will need to do the shim thing again when you set it up

Old Days? I don't remember any names from back then but I've always been bad with names, some days remembering my own is enough of a challenge. I do remember there were a lot more pet stores that carried fish. There's nothing on the east side except Wal Mart and I won't buy from their produce section let alone anything alive.

Well the tank moved again. Thank you to Saltwater Saloon for a same day move call. Image That 30 3/4" tall skimmer does not fit under there. So got a few options 1. Putting the chiller in that spot to the left and the skimmer in the staircase where the sump for the 75 is. 2 cut that stand floor and drop it in, hoping plumbing would not be an issue. 3 Order the original skimmer cup for the Orca Pro I, the cup you see is from a Orca Pro II which is a taller neck.

It could fit but I would also need to buy internal pumps and get rid of the external to make up the space. May have to ditch the chiller and upgrade that too... will see.

Looks to be 2 3/4" difference, would stand 28" tall. I have 30 3/4" in there for space but not the extra inch or half inch to put the cup onto the body.
