Mikembe's 28g Nano-Cube LED

Postby mikembe » Thu Dec 13, 2012 1:19 pm

Thought I would post a profile of my 28G Nano-Cube Pro LED. This is my first foray into saltwater aquariums since back in the day when I was a grade-schooler and my dad had a 125 gallon SW tank. This was setup 2 years ago back on 11/17/10. Since that time, I’ve learned a ton and made a lot of changes. Things have died & things have thrived!!!

Great looking nano cube. Hopefully you can keep it going for a while yet and get things to really take off and fill in. You don't see a lot of full grown nanos.

Over the last 6 months I've been having phosphate problems on my nano-cube. I was having some cyano, GHA, and macro-algae outbursts on my sand bed and rocks. Likely from high phosphate levels. So about a week ago I decided to add a sump to my nano-cube which required me to ditch the old stand. I figured adding a bigger skimmer, refugium, and increased water volume could only help. In the process of tearing the tank down and setting it up, I scrubbed the rocks and changed out the sand bed. I also changed about 90% of the water in addition to adding 16 gallons of new water to the sump.

I know its a risky proposition doing all of this in one day but it had to be done in order to add a sump.

The issue that I just discovered yesterday was that my Mag levels dropped to about 900-1000 (I tested once and it was around 900 and the second time it was at 1000 using a red sea pro test kit) which seems weird with so much new water (salt mix is reef crystals by the way). I also tested my my pH (8.2)salinity (1.025), alk (9 dkh), and calcium (400) which all seemed good to me. One other weird thing is that my coralline has bleached out along the back wall which seems strange.

Does anyone know why my magnesium levels would have dropped so quick? I typically test them once per month and dose with BRS additives and they've never been so low.

Updated pics. Things are looking good since I added a sump/fuge 6 months back.

Only bad thing that has happened since was the loss of a 3 year old crocea clam.

Just posted some updated tank shots. Been a long time.

As far as updates go I got a new clam about 4 months ago and a GBTA 2 months ago. Both are doing great. I also have a pair of extreme onyx clowns from SF aquatics awhile back that still feel relatively new.. Tank is crammed as usual but is looking the best it's been in its 4.5 years.

A lot of time and patience going into a cube like that. Well done Mike! Tank is looking great. Have you had a problem with the black sand to have magnetic pieces in it?

The black sand is magnetic but not too hard to deal with. I don't really use my mag float anymore as I prefer to just scrub the glass with a pad anyways. It does occasionally get into the wet sides of the mp10s but they are pretty easy to clean. Overall I like it b/c it looks different and it's really easy to see how dirty the sand bed gets.

Been awhile since I've posted.
This tank is looking the best ever. at 5.5 year mark.
I had some bubble algae in the past but none at all now. Only nuisance stuff I have is a few sprouts of green algae & a little red wire algae.
Current fish list:
-Marine Betta
-pair of extreme onyx snowflakes. 1 hosts a large RBTA which moved to back right corner (not ideal)
-Yellow Assessor
-Tailspot Blenny
-yellow watchman goby & tiger pistol
Inverts:
-CB shrimp
-blood red shrimp
-pistol
-serpent star
Also added an open brain and 3 Millie frags (from sodak)
Equipment wise I got a Jebao 4 head doser setup a few weeks ago to do 2-part but I'm still waiting for dosing containers to arrive to complete that

Dosing containers arrived Friday. Got em setup. Now it's just a matter of getting the dosing amount figured out.

I also did a fuge mod where I made an eggcrate/pvc rack to elevate the rock & macros off the bottom. I have a hydor 240 blowing underneath to add flow & keep detritus stirred up..

What do you think of the dosing containers? I saw them at a shop in the cities awhile back and thought they looked sharp. Where did you buy yours from?

I currently just use kalk in my top off but that's risky with a small tank and letting evaporation dictate so have been thinking of going to metered dosing.

The dosing containers are great. I have a 3 container one ($56) on my 220 and have two individuals ($16) on my Nano. I got them from Amazon.
I was previously doing kalk on my nano along with weekly dosing of alk & ca but it was a pain and my levels would always drop until I could dose again
