40 breeder build

Postby AMDGamer » Tue Mar 25, 2014 9:16 pm

Getting the 40 up and running, got the stand so far built and currently sanding level and smooth. Planning on the reef octopus bh90 skimmer and a brs rodi unit. Gonna be putting panels on the stand that covers the trim on tank along with canopy. So far it's a lot of learning and bonding time with dad:) , I am also ordering 80 lbs of sand and 50 lbs of rock from reefrocks.net. WillImageImageImageImageImage keep posting pics when new stuff comes along

80lbs of sand is quite a bit isn't it or doing other things with? Like a refugium with a deep sand bed?

K so update, got the 40 drilled as I decided to run a sump, got the bulk head and overflow box done today and resealed the sump ( 29 gallon) not sure how old it was, doing baffles next week and grabbing a reef octopus nwb110 skimmer along with a eheim 1250 return pump:) not gonna have water back in till I move in August so it gives me time to gather supplies for the reef tank ( mixed)

I have a DC-6000 and DC-12000 and I like them both so far, but the Eheim is legendary as far as quiet and reliability goes.

Yeah will be doin baffles in sump when I get skimmer in bout 2 weeks and then it's water time:) gonna silicone a piece of glass on the 40 tho from front to back under the rim just for a piece of mind. It likes to bow when filled quit a bit. Still pondering the kessel led or if I should go the ecotech radions or if anyone else has idea that would be awesome .

I am personally a fan of the Kessil, but on a rectangular tank the radion is a good fit. Matt has EcoTech's above his 40br's at the shop, you could check them out there..

Getting the plumbing done, how does the union and ball valve look I think it's in the right order. So basically waiting on silicone to fully cure and prolly water time in the next couple days :)

return line looks good, drain wise if you expect that to go full siphon you'll want a gate valve, I'm assuming you don't WANT it to go siphon (thus the airline and no second channel) in which case I may have bumped the pipe size up to 1.5 inch, so you have more pipe wall to cling to, but see how it works first. You'll naturally want an extension in the sump off the drain to get you as close to in the water as possible to reduce noise.

Good progress!

yeah i wanted to do a gate valve but to scared of it overflowing if a snail decides to take a ride and not have a backup drain, Yeah thats why im trying the side pipe first to see if that knocks down the noise, but if not the tank is downstairs so if there is a mini waterfall sound then its fine lol thanks tho for the support.
Will be shimming the stand tonight and getting some water soon (maybe tomorrow)

You got'er under control then. I don't know much about what the side pipe will do, but you're right that you don't want a siphon if it's your only drain. One thing I've seen is a float in the overflow area that when pops shuts off the return pump so that you don't flood.

I would also recommend a longer pipe on your drain to get it as close to water. Not only to quiet the waterfall effect, but also to stop splashing and salt creep

40 breeder build

Postby AMDGamer » Sun Jan 18, 2015 8:45 pm

Well figured that since the tank was new and I wanted a bigger sump eventually I moved my tank and put the sump behind the wall. Liking the room for the sump already now wanting to run a 40breeder for a sump

Not sure why it adds a double of each photo?
