My new tank!

Postby acexotix » Sun Dec 28, 2014 7:59 pm

Hey all,

I finally got the wife to agree to getting a tank again. It's been a few years for me since I moved from CO three years ago. I will post my build here. I ordered my Biocube 29 last week and it's set for delivery tomorrow! Will post pics when it arrives :)

One question.... does anyone have a small piece of clean live rock I could use with my dry pukani I ordered for seeding? I have the live sand coming tomorrow but want to use a small established piece of rock to help the dry stuff along. I will pay if ya want :)

Looking forward to seeing another cube get put together!! I wish I had some rock for you, my cube rock is well seasoned but Colonial hydroid infested, which is why none of it made it into the big tank, not even the sump, those things are evil!

I got 1 box of 3 total today, the other two come tomorrow. Same thing in each box, ordered at the same time, shipped from the same place, picked up by the same truck... You get the picture- shipping is interesting.

Tank arrived today! Outside box was damaged. Damage through the Styrofoam and even the main biocube box was damaged. Luckily..... the tank was fine :) now...... just waiting for my stand as it wasn't here today. Will put pics up as soon as I fill it. Also getting an RO system from the butterfly house on Thursday. :) imagine I'll fill it up Friday night.

Anyone have advice on how to get the lights to auto dim and come on to simulate periods? Eventually I'm going to put the retrofit LED kit on it you can buy. Is it just a timer or is it a specific light/bulb I would need

Picked up the RO units today. It seems as mossy have color coded lines but this one is all white. Am I right to assume the supply line hooks up to the "in" port, the waste like confess from the "out" port and the product line comes from the top? I'm having a hard time figuring this thing out

I'll give you a call this week hc. Slayer, looks good. Mine is still hazy from adding sand yesterday. What did you put in the middle chamber? I'm gonna do egg create for Bottom with chemi pure elite under the egg crate and chaeto above. Trying to figure out how I could get some filter floss above the chaeto. Thinking of extending the egg crate up and mashing a makeshift media basket and put plexiglass on the sides

That's awesome. I'm excited for my rock to come. Sand haze finally cleared up. I'll post a pic when the scaping is done. Then it's the long wait to cycle. How did you cycle yours? I don't feel like killing a damsel. Think i can just throw a piece of uncooked shrimp in and let it rot?

Sounds exciting.
Once you get your rock in (assuming it's live) it will start (or restart) the cycle. You shouldn't need to add food or fish to start the cycle. It should take about a month or so. to complete. Just check and make sure there's no ammonia or nitrite before you slowly add the livestock.

could get away from cycle with water from cycled system, and some rock. or like i did on my 200g use Microbe-Lift Nite-Out II. and flooded system with Bactria needed. took 1 day to cycle. had fish in it next day after adding water. nite out works good. petco only place i found that sells it. need any water, my big tank due for water change. could do about 20g if you wanted it.

Unfortunately the kit i got didn't have those tests. Thought that was really weird. I am going up to Sioux Falls Aquatics this afternoon and will get the tests amd check it out then. The fish are really active and don't show signs of stress so fir now I'm taking it as a good sign. Here's a pic after the water change.

Forgive me for the background noise but here's a video of it so far. Picked up two crabs and a snail from Sioux Falls Aquatics. They tested the water and showed basically 0 ammonia and minimal nitrite so lookim good so far. Now just gonna let it settle in for a few weeks and enjoy. Thank you everyone for the help so far. cool hope water rock and sand pushes cycle faster. took a little wail for mine to spike, my 1st cycle. 1st ammonia, then nitrite, then nitrate. so before you add to much. wait and see if you go through the 3 spikes. mine didnt have the waters rock or sand..took 3 months to finish cycle. on last one i added nite-out. next day it was cycled.got to see dakotas reefs tank tonight. wish mine was as cool. got some good frags from him. heres a video of his tank. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-8Obl4gvwY

Yea I think the stuff you gave me is helping. I'm keeping a test log to watch for spikes. (I'm a data nerd anyway haha). Nothing else is going in for a while. Just gonna watch, observe, and enjoy. The hermits I put in yesterday have mowed most of the little hair algae down already overnight. I'm going to menards and building the fuge light today. Then will need to get some chaeto. I'm putting purigen where the sponge is between chamber 2 and three and chemi pure elite on bottom of chamber two. Chaeto above that and filter floss on top of chamber 2. Will eliminate the sponge and bio balls to avoid nitrate factory.
Beautiful tank. I love the acros! What did you get from him?
