Are you sure you light is strong enough? Whites on the lowest setting and blues on 30% could be a little low unless that light is super bright? I would check your PAR readings and see what your levels are

When I put LEDS on my 72, I ran the whites at 30 and blues at 40, ramped up light levels 5% per week till I got to 75% blues, 65% whites. Coral went through it acting up from time to time, but stay the corse on lighting, and see what comes up. Biggest thing, is don't change alot at one time. Leave the filtration alone. And work 1 facet at a time.

My second chamber is empty. I will move my skimmer to it this weekend. I've had it this way for a few days, thought I'd see an algae outbreak but so far so good. Fish seem ok too. Just going to continue monitoring. I do believe this is going to be a fish only tank going forward as I'm tired of killing coral.

I have decided that for now coral is on hold. After much discussion with Matt, here's the newest addition!

Image

So far he's acting great and exploring. Picking at the rocks and has even eaten. Will continue to observe during his transition to his new home but so far he's great!

I've been reading on the tobies and it seems mine is the smallest anyone suggests keeping them. Matt said he's been in sioux falls 2 years already. He'd probably be pushing it in this one full grown admittedly. I'm just going to focus on keeping him alive long enough to need another tank and if I do then I'll cross that bridge :)

This guy is awesome. Swimming around, picking at the rocks, and showing off his great colors. He's skittish though. I stand up and he zooms right back to his hiding spot for a little bit. Think he's still just getting used to the new home.

What's a cheap source for hermits? "Puff" loves em but at a dollar something a piece it could be a spendy dinner after a while.

Hermits? That can't be a very nutritional meal no matter the price.
Chop up some frozen shrimp. That's much cheaper & more humane and will still help wear down its teeth.

Why not nutritional? They eat crabs and shrimp in the wild. I'm gonna go try some mussels and frozen shrimp today but so far she just has eaten a few pellets but loves the hermits. She crushes the shells when they go inside and picks at the live rock so I think she's getting plenty of wear on her teeth.

I think snails would be more nutritional than crabs but still too expensive outside of a once-in-awhile treat. Just my opinion.

Re: My new tank!

Postby acexotix » Tue May 26, 2015 1:30 pm

Sad day yesterday. Went to Pierre for the weekend and came home to dead fish. All but my lawnmower. I tested everything and didn't see anything the differed from my normal readings. I did a 5g water change in hopes to save my lawnmower but woke up to him being gone too.

Prior to leaving, I noticed the power had ich and it had gotten worse. I tried treating it and had a neighbor watch the tank. She texted me Sunday saying all fish were happy and eating. I got home Monday to the scene I described. Temp was up to 80 because I increased it to try and fight the ich.

The coral all looked fantastic. Duncan I got back is out and waving like crazy. All polyps open. Mini starfish doing great. Just fish am wiped out.

So my theory is the ich finally got to the puffer and killed her. She must have released something into the water and got the other fish. Like I said, all the tests showed stable to what I normally show and coral ate happy as can be.

So I've learned my lesson and am going to set up a QT. Im going to leave the display fallow and observe the corals for a while. I'm the meantime, when I set up the qt, could someone give me pointers. My plan is to buy all of the fish that will go on the display over the next couple of months and qt them and treat the qt. Then will slowly transfer each fish to the display after the alloted time and will have everything in the display. Then I can treat down the qt as I won't add more fish.

Can I just take a chuck of LR from my display for the startup of qt? I'll leave it bare bottom. I've read a HOB filter is fine for qt. This true? I imagine no special lighting is required.

If all of this is true, does anyone have an old heater or HOB they'd loan me/sell cheap to get this going?

I'm happy my coral have finally turned around but now I gotta figure out the fishies.

Sorry to hear about your losses.
Sounds like you have the right idea for a QT. you can get by w/ just a HOB and a heater w/out a light.
Your best bet is to run the HOB on your main tank for a few weeks (to get bacteria started) and then set it up on the QT. a piece of live rock could also get a cycle started as well.
I actually am in the process of resetting up my own QT but will be using a sump w/ filter sock vs. the HOB.

I'm tearing it down due to a variety of things. Anyone interested in all of the live rock (about 40 lbs) coral frags, zoas and a duncan, and sand? 140 can have it all

So.... i basically neglected the tank for a couple weeks and it sends everything has turned around. It's all living and doing much better. I have no idea why. So..... im trying to keep it up. I added a 6 line from Matt today and it's swimming around super happy. The damsel is a little iffy of him but he can't get where the 6 line can.

I rearranged the rock today to try and get better flow. Resulted in removing about 5 smaller pieces of rock but it sends to get more flow to dead spots that were there before. We'll see.

Anyway. Update of what's in it is a lawnmower blenny, damsel, and 6 line wrasse. Rasta zoas spreading like crazy, green paly's, dragon tongue, duncan (griwn to 3 heads), monti cap, and a cool blue chalice.

I have this spot where a plug is and the palys have all moved. Id like to put something in the place of the plug and let the palys grow around it. Looking for suggestions. Want something that pops! Like a nice red or blue. I have a green SPS Thats growing really well so wouldn't be oposed to another if it was on the easier side of the spectrum as far as sps go. The one I have is pictured below.

Are all of the white spots calcium deposits? If so, is it good? I don't add any trace elements or have a reactor or anything so Idk where I'd get excess calcium.
