New 29 Coralife Biocube setup

Postby darkone8484 » Wed Jan 21, 2015 3:12 am

Obligatory new tank leak test picture. ;) I suppose this is a bit like what painters feel like with a new blank piece of canvas or sculptors with a fresh block of clay. I'll update soon with my plans and dreams for the build.

Thays my build thread. I'm lookin at doing an ATO next because the thing evaporates water fairly quickly. And I'd like an MP10ES but they're pricey

Ive considered an ATO as well. I would like to possibly make my own, I don't think the theory behind how they work is too difficult so I just might end up creating my own at some time.

Got my tank drilled this weekend. I'm its going to be a Herbie setup. I just capped them for now until I can get my stand and make my sump. Both are 1". My plan is for dual 1/2" or 3/8" returns. For now, I'll just be happy to get my overcrowded Biocube 14 inhabitants moved into their new home....

Ive been on a bit of a hiatus with a dramatic change in my career.

So..... My Biocube has been suffering from a bit of neglect the past few months, but I am back at it with a new customization. My corals are starting to show signs of stress most likely due to the bulbs being in there since February. I hate the idea of throwing money away on new bulbs. So, after doing a lot of research I decided on upgrading my lighting to the Steve's LED custom setup for the hood. I went with the JMB 12K lighting. Not trying to start a flame war over which is better, Rapid or Steve's, but with my particular background in electronics and specifically circuit boards using heavy heat sinks with forced cooling. I have found that blowers are much, much more efficient at removing heat.

I emailed the company with several questions and had an answer to them in about a day. The most interesting thing I wanted to share was that heat sink is capable of adding even MORE led's if you wanted to. Granted there is already more light than anyone would ever need, but the great thing is that I will be able to add other colors and adjust the light to my liking. I'm going to be using their 4 channel controller so I eventually plan to use all 4 channels. For now, I am just going to be using the lights that come with the kit, but I will do a bit of brainstorming after I get it all installed and have a better idea of what I am working with.

I'll update with some new pictures once I get the kit and start installing it. I also need to get my sump built as well. I will update as soon as I have more to share.

How many LEDs and which colors are included with the Steve's kit? What was the total cost? Chris helped me piece together a 30 LED fixture for my Biocube, and I'd be interested in comparing the capabilities of our two fixtures. I'm running 12 neutral white, 12 royal blue, 12 cool blue, and 6 True Violets.
