Hey Chris, I decided to try a block of it in my frag tank since I only have room for live rock in the sump. Haven't had a chance to put it in the sump yet though.

got it and love it but not for nitrate reduction. IMO

Agree with all said here, seems to do what it is supposed to, though I wouldn't call it a nitrate control method. Had it in my sump for a while with no negative results as I pulled a bunch of rock out of the DT.

Think of it as a some of the most 'surface area' rock you buy as a place for bacteria to live.

Yes, very much so IMHO. I added the block as I wanted to significantly reduce the live rock in the tank to achieve a specific look I was going for. I added the block, gave it a while, then piece by piece have pulled rock out letting the block take the rock's place as a bacteria zone.
