Aunt gave me a 5g tank...shrimp tank?

Postby Korrine » Sun Aug 12, 2012 4:37 pm

Thinking of doing a little freshie shrimp tank in my daughter's room. I'm assuming all I need are the basics; light, filter, rock, fake plants? I've never had a freshy shrimp tank before. Any insight?

Thanks :)

I believe you need live plants for shrimp but i could be mistaken. I have only seen planted tanks with freshwater shrimp. I think you could do it very easily as there are a lot of low light low tech plants you can use.

I don't think live plants are a necessity for just some ghost or red cherry shrimp, but they are highly recommended. Korrine, I've got a couple of small pieces of drifwood and java fern you could have. Under a fluorescent strip light or a cfl this will grow just fine.

and i have the shrimp!!!! i have a butt load of cherrys atm i just hav to catch em when they're wanted :P (they are in the dirtiest of my tanks) i also have ample plants to add to the java fern if you take it. in my opinion, the only way a shrimptank flourishes is with plants (shrimp eat dead plants) if you have fake plants, the shrimp with live but not flourish. also, you need a heater to keep the water relativly warm so the shrimp will breed. pm me if you need any details cuz i got me self a 5gal shrimp tank atm and a 2.5gal shrimp tank.

what could we put in as far as fish? A male guppy or something? Bumblee bee catfish???though I think they are technically supposed to be brackish? I haven't been in FW for over 3 years and haven't had any fw shrimp either.

In a tank that size you could do a few of the really small community fish, but you're better off just sticking with shrimp. The red cherry shrimp that Will has are really hardy and can be a lot of fun to see skittering around the tank.

I can set you up with some planted substrate if you want? I am going to redo the 55 into a Cichlid tank. Shouldn't need too much for a five gallon.

As far as having those plants, can I use declorinated tap water or use RO and add stuff? I'm thinking of setting it up later tonight. Anyone know off hand where I can get bulbs like that?

Treated tap water works great. It even provides some of the trace elements that are need, like Ca or Mg. Can you get a close up of the bulb. I'm not sure what the base is like, so it will be hard to find a source.

Are fresh shrimp a good source of food for quarter sized to adult sized Angel or Discus fish in their tank?

You can hatch brine shrimp in a hatchery and then place them in green water to fatten them up a bit and they are really good food source.

That would work fine. How thick should it be on the bottom? Do I have to worry about dead spots and how thick to put it, like with sand in sw?

The thickness of the substrate will be dictated by what plants you'll have. If you're going to have java fern and moss it doesn't need to be very thick (read as <1") because these plants don't take in nutrients with their roots. If you want some plants that are heavier root feeders, like crypts or swords, then using 1-2" of substrate works well. These heavier root feeders also help to break up any potentially anaerobic spots when their roots grow through the substrate.

P.S. I've got a crypt you can have as well when you come over to get the java fern.

Look good? Is that light ok? I guess I could pick up some Java fern and wood?

Those are a good wattage. What is the color temp on them? I'll be around the house this evening. Give me a call if you want to pick up a couple plants.

Edit: Nevermind the color temp. Just saw it on the box, 6500K. Those bulbs will work great.

Since part of the substrate was fresh when I picked it up, I decided to get Emilee 2 fancy guppies from NAS. Hopefully there's enough bacteria to multiply. Em really likes them, though. I hope to add plants in a couple days.

What else should/could we put in fish wise?

Will little shrimps eat leftover fish food too? I know someone said they'll eat some plant matter. Em wants to feed the fish every day. I'm stressing on how these tiny fish don't need food every day in such a small container. I'm going to shoot for her feeding them on Tues and Fri or should I add a 3rd day? I know once algea gets established, they will pick at that too.

I wouldn't count at them picking at too much algae. I don't think there would be much problem with feeding every day as long as it is an appropriate amount. What about feeding some small pellets so and she only gives enough each fish a couple per day, so you can make sure they are all eaten?

Aunt gave me a 5g tank...shrimp tank?

My four cents:
A sponge on the prefilter would go a long way towards keeping the shrimp safe as well. Hatchlings would get sucked into the filter pretty easy. When doing water changes on the tank, I used to rubber-band some pantyhose on the end of the gravel vac as well.

Walmart has pretty good mini compact fluorescents, right in the aquarium section usually. They're straight, so more light it directed down into the tank, and more easily reflected by the lighting fixture's reflector. Spiral always made me a little queasy, not fitting well in some fixtures. I broke more than one of them in my day.

For food, I always had great luck with hbh moist spirulina pellets from kensfish.com. I used hbh crab and lobster bites as well, and omega one veggie discs went over well. A couple times a week I would also give a little dried seaweed. They have so many quality foods just for shrimp now, though... even Fluval has food just for shrimp.

I also think live plants benefit shrimp greatly, and would consider them crucial to breeding most shrimp species.

You think this tank is big enough for an Oto? It's a 5g.
