Paired?

Postby mizuno11 » Sat Oct 04, 2014 11:52 am

I think two of my 8 discus have paired but I'm not sure. Last week or so these two have just stayed near each other apart from the group in the right corner of the tank.

Should I put them in their own tank or just leave them be?

Beautiful discus that's for sure! Maybe move to a different tank when you see more activity going on?

Depends upon your goals... if you want to breed them it would be best to move the others to a different tank. This is usually not an option however. I'd put a piece of slate or a breeding cone in their area to see if they end up with fertilized eggs. If so, I would artificially hatch those out and move the pair to a separate cycled/aged tank for the next time.

If you are not planning on breeding/raising them, then no need to do anything unless they get mean to the others.

** I have never kept discus. I have bred angels, and that is where I am drawing my advice from

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep an eye on them for a while. This behavior started just over a week ago. The only time they leave each other is when I feed them. Its quite interesting to watch them cause they not only sit side by side but they also swim in tight circles around each other.

sounds like they have paired off to me I keep and spawn my discus in a 20 high, if your intent is to raise the fry you should move them and make sure the water parameters are correct, you need soft water or the eggs will not hatch I use 120ppm and 82 degrees
